Sustainable Construction with a Mission: How Seven Source is Changing Commercial Construction

June 9, 2025 | By ICIC

Long before Seven Source, Inc. earned its reputation for sustainability, President and CEO Nigel Chiddick was navigating rooftops and rainwater challenges up and down the West Coast. In 2018, driven by a belief that buildings should do more than just stand, he founded Seven Source with a clear purpose: to create infrastructure that lasts and supports the communities around it. “Too often, construction focuses only on cost and speed,” Nigel reflects. “I wanted to prove we could build infrastructure that lasts and enriches the people who use it.” From day one, his vision blended technical expertise with a commitment to equity—setting the stage for a company celebrated not just for what it builds, but for why it builds.

Seven Source emerged as a premier manufacturer representative agency specializing in building envelope technology and sustainable design. From its inception, it was about more than materials. It was about building a business that reflected the values of integrity, collaboration, and forward-thinking design.

Smarter Solutions with Community in Mind

Nigel’s definition of innovation centers on practical creativity—introducing ideas that make buildings work better and last longer, especially in demanding environments. One standout example is the transformation of Houston’s Lynn Wyatt Square. Once a hard concrete plaza, the space needed a complete reimagining to manage stormwater and support public events. Seven Source introduced a high-performance waterproofing system tailored to the city’s climate and the project’s long-term needs.

“It wasn’t just about technical performance,” Nigel explains. “It was about creating a space people could gather in, safely and comfortably.”

The redesigned square now features a performance lawn, cascading water feature, accessible pathways, and vibrant gardens—an enduring gathering place that celebrates community. That same mindset guided Seven Source’s work at Lincoln Park in Long Beach, California, where a once-underused urban site became a family-friendly green oasis.

Recognition that Fuels the Mission

As Seven Source’s reputation grew, so did its impact. The company became known not only for innovative solutions but also for its commitment to mentoring the next generation—especially those historically left out of the building envelope profession. Through strategic partnerships with University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as Prairie View A&M University and Southern University and A&M College, Seven Source has developed meaningful and sustainable pathways for underrepresented talent. These efforts include providing scholarships to reduce financial barriers, offering internship opportunities that deliver hands-on industry experience, and implementing career expansion and workforce training programs that prepare students for leadership roles in the building technologies sector. Together, these initiatives reflect Seven Source’s commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and long-term success in the industry.

The Seven Source team

In 2024, Seven Source was honored with an IC100 Award from ICIC. This recognition—reserved for the fastest-growing businesses in under-resourced communities—celebrates more than revenue. It spotlights businesses like Seven Source that generate quality jobs, build generational wealth, and foster inclusive economic development.

“Receiving the IC100 Award validated the years of persistence, the risks we took, and the values we hold,” Nigel shares. “It told our team: you’re doing something that matters—not just for the business, but for your community and your industry.”

That affirmation has energized Seven Source’s mission to use every project as an opportunity for both performance and positive social impact.

Bridging the Gap Between Concept and Adoption

While Seven Source has made its mark, the road hasn’t been easy. One of the toughest hurdles? Convincing stakeholders to adopt sustainable materials that often come with higher upfront costs. Nigel and his team tackled the challenge head-on. Seven Source developed detailed case studies and hosted training sessions—showcasing real-world performance data.

“Knowledge-sharing became our secret weapon,” Nigel says. “Once clients saw how durable materials reduced maintenance costs over time, they became champions of sustainable design.”

Those honest conversations shifted mindsets and unlocked new opportunities for projects that benefit both clients and communities.

Looking Ahead with Purpose

“At every stage of growth, we stay grounded in our mission. We want to be known not just for how we build, but for why we build.”

In the coming years, Seven Source aims to grow nationally and internationally, expand its offerings, and develop proprietary systems that improve performance and reduce environmental impact. The company is also focused on deepening partnerships with architects, engineers, and developers to meet the growing demand for high-quality, durable construction solutions.

“At every stage of growth, we stay grounded in our mission,” Nigel says. “We want to be known not just for how we build, but for why we build.”

Words of Wisdom for Fellow Entrepreneurs

Nigel’s advice for other business owners? “Stay curious,” Nigel urges. “Surround yourself with partners who question the status quo, and never shy away from calculated risks. Above all, listen to your customers—real innovation solves their everyday problems.”
