When Gilbert Burciaga decided to start a painting company, he wasn’t chasing a lifelong dream or following a family tradition. He was trying to get his own house painted.
“I called painters and they wouldn’t answer their phone,” he said. “I left voicemails, and no one would call me back. I had a couple of guys come out and actually measure my house and they never sent me a quote.” That experience sparked something. “I thought to myself, I can do better than that…so I did.”
Today, Gilbert is the owner of BCP Contractors, a growing home services company based in Colorado. What began as a solution to a frustrating personal problem has grown into a thriving business known for reliability, craftsmanship, and customer care. And as Gilbert puts it, the formula is simple: “Answer your phone, call people back, show up on time, and do a good job.”
But beneath that simplicity is a deeper story—one rooted in innovation, data-driven growth, and a commitment to doing business differently.
Before founding BCP Contractors, Gilbert spent more than two decades in the tech world, selling video collaboration software and managing client relationships. That experience gave him a skillset that few in the construction space have: a data-first mindset and a deep appreciation for customer engagement.
“When I was in tech, I collected a lot of data—what products my clients bought, what software versions they used, what I had promised them,” he said. “I realized that kind of information could help me grow this new business, too.”
So, he started tracking. Every quote sent, every ZIP code served, every gallon of paint used. Over the years, Gilbert built a database of customer insights that now spans seven years. It’s the foundation of how BCP Contractors is evolving beyond painting into concrete coatings, xeriscaping, and other value-added home services.
That focus on evolution is what led him to ICIC.
In 2022, Gilbert joined the Colorado cohort of ICIC’s ICCC program, an executive education initiative designed to help established small businesses grow, access capital, and embrace innovation. The program provides 40 hours of learning, one-on-one coaching, and a network of support—tailored to the realities of small businesses in under-resourced communities.
“I had a friend who invited me to attend,” Gilbert recalled. “I showed up, but his schedule didn’t allow him to continue. Boy, was I happy I did.”
Through the ICCC program, Gilbert gained not only new business strategies but also the confidence to lean into what made BCP Contractors unique. “It helped validate that what I was doing had value—and that I wasn’t alone in trying to grow something from the ground up.”
Gilbert’s connection to innovation came full circle when he was invited to join the Intuit More with AI Tour stop in Boulder, Colorado. The event featured remarks from Ashok Srinivasan, Chief Data Officer at Intuit, and Colorado State Senator Mark Baisley. Gilbert was part of a select group of entrepreneurs who sat down with Ashok for a roundtable discussion on the future of small business and AI.
It was a lightbulb moment.
“I’m chomping at the bit to leverage the data I’ve collected,” Gilbert said. “AI can help me re-engage previous clients, let them know about new services, and run a ‘win-back’ campaign for customers who didn’t convert the first time.”
From marketing automation to customer segmentation, he’s exploring how artificial intelligence can help BCP Contractors grow smarter, not just bigger.
For Gilbert, innovation is all about making things easier for the homeowner. “Whether it’s repairing a few drywall holes or painting an entire house, we want to make it easy for the average homeowner to get projects done,” he said. That includes expanding into garage epoxy floors and xeriscape landscaping—all services that complement the painting business and speak to Colorado homeowners’ changing needs.
Website limitations and earlier email marketing barriers were challenges, but Gilbert sees every constraint as a prompt to innovate. “Previously, I had to email clients one at a time to make them aware of our new services. But now my email service provider offers up to 25,000 emails per month,” he said. “With better tools and better data, campaigns are possible.”
Gilbert has big plans for the future: grow the concrete coatings and xeriscape divisions, deepen customer engagement, and continue tapping into AI to support marketing and operations.
And while the business is growing, the mission stays grounded: show up, follow through, and treat customers with care.
Gilbert’s advice to other entrepreneurs is simple but powerful: “Be excited about ways you can bring innovation into your business. Whether it’s a new service, a better technique, or the right technology—there’s always something you can improve.”
