The Houston Defender Network has served as the primary Black information source for the Houston area for over 90 years. Operating on multiple platforms (web, social media, events, and print) the Defender covers three counties: Harris, Fort Bend, and Brazoria.
The Defender’s coronavirus education campaign focused on the disproportionate deadly impact of COVID-19 on Black Houstonians from a physical, financial, and emotional perspective. Emphasis was placed on vaccine importance, parental tools addressing virtual learning challenges, and access to food, mental healthcare, and financial support resources. Additionally, the Defender partnered with six community organizations (the NAACP, Urban League, Top Ladies, Black Ministers, Black Chamber, and Pan-Hellenic Council) to host three virtual ‘State of Black’ events for Houston, with Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County, with Judge Lina Hidalgo, and Texas, with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Senators Borris Miles, and Royce West. These events aimed to shed light on COVID-19 policies plans from the political perspective.
