ICIC is partnering with Intuit to help small businesses owners gain more understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit them. ICIC recently conducted a nationwide study of small and-mid-market businesses that included five focus groups and a national survey which garnered more than 3,700 responses. The study’s goal was to identify knowledge gaps and training preferences, such as how these businesses use AI, barriers to adoption, and where the greatest opportunities are for AI to support business owners.

Research Findings

The complete list of findings and recommendations from the study will be published in a research paper in February 2025. A preview of our findings for California businesses is available now.

California Small Businesses and AI:

1. Compared to small business owners nationally, a greater percentage of California small business owners cited lack of access to experts as a barrier.
2. California small business owners look to their business and professional networks for information to understand and use AI.
3. In California, AI adoption may be happening bottom-up, with more junior employees leading the charge.
4. California small businesses are already using AI to save time on routine tasks but are looking toward more complex applications.

Learn How You Can Do More with AI

ICIC and Intuit recently announced the Intuit More with AI Tour. Launching in 2025, the tour includes six half-day events held across the U.S. that will provide small and mid-market businesses with actionable insights and hands-on experience on a range of small business AI tools from Intuit and other companies. The curriculum is informed by ICIC’s extensive research, and includes practical applications, benefits, and responsible implementation strategies, all at no cost to attendees.

The tour will initially visit Georgia and California, with more states and cities to follow. The selection process will prioritize areas with a high concentration of small and mid-market businesses and a demonstrated need for AI education and support.
