Recession Recovery Tracker

How the Coronavirus Recession and Recovery Affected Businesses and Jobs in the 100 Largest Metropolitan Areas

Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) presented the most detailed and comprehensive information about what happened to businesses and jobs in the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas during the coronavirus recession and recovery. Every quarter, from the second quarter of 2020 through the first quarter of 2022, we tracked the changes in the numbers of businesses and jobs by:

  • Under-resourced communities and non-under-resourced communities. (ICIC defines under-resourced communities as relatively heavily populated areas of high poverty and low income in metropolitan areas.)
  • Race/ethnicity of business owners.
  • Size of business.
  • Industry.

The information we provided was helpful to policymakers, small business assistance providers, community and economic development professionals, community foundations, researchers, and others who wanted to know how the recession and recovery affected businesses and jobs in their metropolitan areas and how they could best target assistance to the companies and locations that needed it most.

Summary Reports

The summary reports give an overview of the impacts. For the most detailed information about what happened to different types of businesses and their jobs in each metropolitan area, see our data dashboard, where you can select the geographic areas and types of businesses you are interested in.
