Online Appendix

The New Face of Under-Resourced Communities

This online appendix presents rankings the level of disadvantage in the under-resourced communities of the 450 cities described in the text of the report The New Face of Under-Resourced Communities.  We rank those communities on an economic disadvantage index that has two equally weighted components:

  • The poverty rate (excluding undergraduate and graduate students) of the city’s under-resourced community or communities.
  • The percentage of the city’s poor who live in the city’s under-resourced community or communities, which we refer to as the “poverty concentration.”

We report the rankings by dividing the 434 cities into tenths, from the most disadvantaged tenth (category 1) to the least disadvantaged tenth (category 10).  Likewise, we report the rankings on each of the two components of our index in the same manner.  The following sortable table shows the ranking of each city’s under-resourced community or communities, by tenth, on the overall economic disadvantage index, the poverty rate, and the poverty concentration.

Note: For the overall disadvantage index, the poverty rate, and the poverty concentration, the values shown in the table range from 1 (most disadvantaged tenth of ranked cities) to 10 (least disadvantaged tenth of ranked cities).
