AFRO News is the oldest Black-owned business in Maryland, and the third-oldest in the United States. For 131 years, AFRO News has offered a platform for images and stories that advance the Black community, and good news not otherwise found. It is a founding member of Word in Black, a collaborative of 10 of the nation’s leading Black news publications. The company has created multiple unique digital livestream shows, including The ChickenBoxx, AFRO News at Noon(ish), and more. Most recently, it has launched the Digital Billboard Network (DBN), building television screens across a series of host sites in Baltimore County, airing AFRO News original programming without a paywall. Its community commitment extends to local entrepreneurship, where it cultivates opportunities for growth and networking within Baltimore’s Black business landscape. In August, AFRO News hosted the Black Business Month “Business Showcase,” where 12 local Black-owned businesses conducted 30-second pitches to a room of business leaders. Additionally, it maintains a regular internship program with students from Baltimore’s HBCUs, including Morgan State University and Coppin State University.
